April 2, 2008 - On to Santa Fe, NM

Mike and I have had a busy day today. We got started early today in Amarillo, TX. Mike had read about a place south of Amarillo called Palo Duro Canyon and wanted to drive to see it. The drive took us about 40 miles south and then west to Silverton, TX where we got on Hwy 207 going north to Claude, TX. The terrain down to Silverton was typical TX plains. It was very flat and open. We were amazed when about 11 miles north of Silverton we came to a large canyon that was 1000 ft deep. It was truly amazing that you are traveling along and looking at this very flat land and then it suddenly drops off into this deep canyon. We drove through the canyon and drove back up and the terrain once again became as flat and open as if the canyon never existed. I have some pictures to post, but I doubt they will do the sights justice.

After getting back to our RV park, we decided to quickly pack up and take off for Albuquerque, NM. I was looking at the atlas and saw that we would be better off staying near Santa Fe because we want to see Taos. So, we changed our plans and drove to Santa Fe. The trip took us through a lot of open country with little vegetation. The closer we got to Santa Fe, the more mesas we started to see. About 60 miles out, we started to see mountains in the distance with snow on top.

Santa Fe is a beautiful area surrounded by mountains on three sides. It sits at 7,000 ft above sea level. This was a surprise to both of us. We had no idea Santa Fe is higher than Denver, CO. Our campground sits on a hillside and from our site we can see the city. From what we have seen so far, the only style of architecture here is the pueblo style. The homes and office buildings blend into the landscape and from a distance you really cannot tell that buildings are present.

Mike asked at the office for a recommendation for a good Mexican restaurant and was told we should try Castros (sounds Cuban -right??) We decided to give it a try and it was evident when we pulled in that this is a local favorite. The food was great. The meals come with green or red chilies. I got the green ones on my meal and they were a little bit hot, but not too hot. Mike got some of both (here that is called getting Christmas - red and green- cute!) The bread that comes with the meal is like a puff. It is like they somehow insert air into the bread so that it comes out as a bubble and the outside is extremely thin bread and the inside is just air. I wish I knew how they get it to puff up like that. It is really good and they have bottles of honey on the table that you can put on it. Yum Yum We decided that we will have to try more Mexican food while we are here.

We have not decided how long we are going to be in Santa Fe. There are five day trips that we've learned of and we know that we want to do at least three of them. Tomorrow we are going to take it easy and just do some site seeing around the town. There is a lot to do here in the downtown area. There is a lot of history here.

Well, I'm going to sign off now. I need to get some sleep. Hopefully, I'll get more pictures posted tomorrow.
