April 21, 2008 - Drive to Oxnard, CA

Ever heard of Oxnard, CA???? Probably not. It is a small town on the coast of CA just north of LA. It is very close to Ventura. So why Oxnard??? It has an RV park whose daily fees are reasonable. I'm sure you are probably aware that things in CA are expensive - well, the RV park fees are expensive here too. Some of these parks charge anywhere from $50 to over $100 per night. They seem to do ok. People stay in them. We try not to pay over $35 a night here in CA. It is possible to do if you shop around some.

One thing we have discovered on this trip is there are a lot of people who live in RVs. It is really shocking just how manydo so. We met one guy yesterday who told Mike that he had lost his job and could not afford to keep his house, so he is renting his house and living in an RV. We've found that people look for RV parks that have full service, including sewer, and will live there full time if the park management will allow them to do so. There are a lot of people whose jobs move them around the country and they choose to live in an RV rather than a motel or renting. I can see why they would want to do so. In this park here in Oxnard, there are several people living in RVs who are working on the same project. This is sort of a neighborhood for them. They get together just like friends in any neighborhood would do. Another thing we have found is that there are a lot of people who have sold their homes and travel full time.

Back to our trip...we started out this morning around 9am and decided to take the Pacific Hwy instead of the Interstate. It took us a lot longer, but the scenary was worth it. We drove from one small town to another. I'm sure you will recogize some of these places - San Clemente, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica and Malibu. It was really hard to distinguish where one town ended and another began. It was pretty much one continuious town until we got to the north side of Malibu. Along the way, there were breaks on the west side where we could see the beach and pacific ocean. After passing Malibu, we got to see a lot of the beach and ocean. It was a beautiful drive. I failed to mention the beautiful flowers. Mike and I commented on how well kept the landscaping was along the way. We saw lots of people working on lawns and entrances to resorts. The flowers and flowering shrubs are just beautiful. I hope some of my pictures will give you an idea of how pretty they are.

Tomorrow, we are driving up the coast to Paso Robles. We are going to stay there for a couple of days before moving inland to Fresno. I am going to try to post pictures from the RV park in Paso Robles.
