March 30 and March 31, 2008 - Oklahoma City,OK and Amarillo, TX

Sunday, March 30th was a nice day in Oklahoma City. It was a little chilly and overcast, but otherwise a nice day. My cousin Ralph came over and picked us up and we spent the day doing some sightseeing including visiting the Cowboy Museum. We had heard that there was a slight possibility of bad thunderstorms later Sunday evening. We came in after having dinner with Ralph and got settled in for the evening. The weather forecasters kept interrupting the shows to say that there were storms developing and that people should keep tuned. As time went on, the storms showed up on radar and there was one that was coming toward where we were staying. Around 10pm, the weather forecasters reported a tornado had touched down west of us. They gave the path of the storm and based on the information they provided, the storm was suppose to be close to us by 11:30. Around 11pm the weatherman was saying that people in our area should go to a shelter or into the safe area of their home. He said that anyone in a mobile home should seek shelter elsewhere. Mike and I debated what to do and finally decided that we needed to get in the truck and drive away from the RV. So, we packed up the dogs and we took off. We drove around until around 12:30am. We came back to the RV park and everything was fine. In fact, it did not appear that there had been any storm near us. So, we went in and went to bed. We probably had not been in bed more than 15 minutes and the wind started blowing hard. Over the next few hours, we got very powerful straight-line winds. Some were so hard that they really shook the camper. I was frightened, but Mike slept right through the storm. Thankfully, nothing happened to us or the RV. My cousin called the next day to ask me if I still liked Oklahoma City. I told him that I do, but that if I were to move here, I would have to have a storm shelter in my home.

On Monday, March 31st, we had to go to the RV repair shop over the interstate from the RV park where we were staying to have a wheel on our camper fixed. It took until around 2pm before we were able to leave Oklahoma City. We decided to go ahead and get on the road. We drove all the way to Amarillo, TX. We got to Amarillo around 7pm and found a really nice RV park. We are going to be here a couple of days and hope to drive to Palo Duro canyon. We are also going to go to see the Cadillac Ranch. If you have never heard of the Cadillac Ranch, it is a big field with the tail end of 10 Caddies sticking out of the ground. People from all over come and spray paint these Cadillacs. In fact, the travel channel had a special on this place a while back. I had no idea we would be seeing it, but we will. I'll post pictures tomorrow.
